Our Mahi

Ngāti Kuri have been committed over the past 8 years to re-visioning our ecological domains and consider the opportunities for positive change, that seek to restore and protect some of our most vulnerable tāonga and habitats remaining in Aotearoa. 

This regeneration has been at the forefront of all work programmes with momentum achieved through various feasibility work including support from previous funders and external consultants which has now positioned Ngāti Kuri Trust Board well to host and sustain nature-based employment opportunities.

This regeneration has been at the forefront of all work programmes with momentum achieved through various feasibility work including support from previous funders and external consultants which has now positioned Ngāti Kuri Trust Board well to host and sustain nature-based employment opportunities.

  • Establish a biosecurity management policy and framework for our mainland, islands and marine activities in and across Te Haumihi and Te Ara whānui.
  • Increase production and security of tāonga plants, their recovery and sanctuary habitats.
  • Build a multi-dimensional labour force to maintain infrastructure, assets and facilities and further establish new restoration sites.
  • Mitigate and respond to the current impacts of COVID-19 with the retention of 6 valuable staff, reaction of new roles for the 8 whānau who have returned home from the cities, 3x 4th Gen leaders who a required to seek alternative incomes.
  • Increase and facilitate predator control activities as a pre requisite to biodiversity enhancement including monitoring and maintenance.
  • Establish a biodiversity hub at Northcape to be commissioned as a prototype informing a large-scale vision for Te Haumihi over the next 10 years, and leveraging from the Ngāti Kuri Pest-Free 2050 strategy.
  • Build and extends enduring relationships and connections with key partners.

We envision the jobs for nature funding as providing a foundational catalyst for change within our region moving towards system-wide changes that recover the mana and prominence of tāonga and habitats that connect us from our mountain ranges to our sea floor and support the Trust Board to respond urgently to the impacts of Covid-19 for whānau seeking employment. This application for capability advancement and nature-based jobs will anchor a complete support system for both experienced and emerging practitioners in our region.

New positions will be supported by iwi leaders, science mentors, researchers and educationalists provided as in-kind through Ngāti Kuri Trust Board. This is a collaborative project that encourages renowned Indigenous researchers, practitioners and experts who are strongly connected to environmental leadership, conservation and restoration to foreground transformative practice and guide the new jobs for nature applicants.
